Volleyball Block PES 294
Stage: Beginner.
Stage Characteristics: The player's timing was off of that of the spiker's. Also there was really no tenacity on the approach to the net, almost as if the player was just guessing. Finally, once the player leaped to make the block he had turned himself sideways away from the spiker and the ball.
What to Change: I would like to see a little more aggression on the approach to the net. Also a better more powerful approach to help him be stronger on takeoff. Finally, staying squared using both hands to try and block instead of one.
Cue: "Use two hands to block"
PES 294, Skill Analysis
Stage: Beginner
Stage Characteristics: Blocker was a little late in his jump. He then only used one arm to attempt the block, allowing his body to twist and his eyes to fall away from the ball.
What to Change: He needs to seal the net with his body, jump with the spiker, use both arms and hands to block, and focus on the ball.
Cue: The single best cue for him to improve would be "Both arms up" because he may have blocked the ball had he used both arms.
Block
Stage: Beginner
Stage Characteristic: Player has no approach to the net. Also, is late to jump to try to block the ball. Only uses one hand instead of two to block the ball.
What to Change: The player needs to be more aggressive when guarding the net. Needs to jump early to stuff ball at net using two hands that are strong and stiff to block ball. Want to reach above and over net.

What to Change: One major improvement is for the guy to square his body up to the net instead of turning sideways. He should also use both hands to block and both hands need to be stiff with fingers. He needs to be more aggressive and judge where to put his hands for the block.
Cue: Square up body
Block with both hands
Be aggressive

He shows how to block a spike by jumping and raising one arm.
What to change:
I don't know if this person has ever been taught how to block. He needs to approach the net straight on, get a powerful jump, and keep both arms up to cover as much area as possible.
Cue: Jump high and get both arms up.

Volleyball Analysis
Stage: Beginner
Stage Characteristics: The blocker used only 1 hand, did not face the net, hands were not turned in to control the ball on contact
What to Change: The blocker should square body to the net, coil and jump off two feet, extend both hand above their head keeping them close together.
Cue: "extend both hand above your head to create a wall"
Skills Analysis
Stage: Beginner
Stage Characteristics: This is beginner because it is fairly easy to perform a block. The blocker needs to stay on the net, jump off of both feet, block with both hands, and (without touching the net) push forward with the hands so the ball lands on the opposing side.
What to change: I would have the blocker on the net. Position the blocker in coordination with the hitter (the farther outside the hitter is the sharper the ball is going to hit on the court) and the set of the ball. Jump off of both feet. Fingers should be spread to get the most surface area of the ball. Push forward when contacting the ball so the ball goes over the net and down. If the blocker is coming from the middle front, and not the right front, the blocker should do a cross over step to align with the hitter. Then complete the block like the right front blocker.
Cue: I would tell the blocker to get on the net jump off of both feet and block with both hands.
Stage: Beginner Stage
Stage: Beginner
Stage Characteristics: The player had right foot way in front of the other, jumping mainly off his front foot. He hardly bent his knees lacking in power. He only used one hand.
What to change: Keep eye contact. Start at net in ready stance, jump off both feet bending knees for power. use both hands to block.
Cue: square up. shoulders to ears. feet parallel
Analysis
Stage: Beginning/Intermediate
Stage Characteristics: I add the intermediate level into the video despite that the blocker is clearly a beginner. The skill could be considered an intermediate skill. There is a lot that goes into blocking. The biggest thing is timing! To block well one has to be familiar with the speed of the game and be able to read the spiker and jump off both feet using both hands in order to attempt a block. The choice also needs to be made whether your going to block outright or will you force the spiker to hit into a safe zone where your teammates can easily pick up the spike. Arms and hands need to locked and ready to absorb a fierce spike which will recochet off the blockers hands back into the field of play, hopefully at the spikers feet.
Blocking is a great part of the game of Volleyball, because it is a huge motivator for the rest of the team. So you want to do it correctly.
What to change: Sorry but I would change everything that learner did in this video. The approach was slow, without timing the jump was off one foot when a better blocking jump would be off two feet, mainly so you don't touch the net like the blocker did in this video. It also didn't seem like the learner was looking at ball and spiker. Finally he used one hand which was not stiff and ready to take a hit from a powerful spike.
Cues: Vertical leap, over and over again... both hands!
