Pirouette

Stage: Beginner/Intermediate

Stage Characteristics: The dancer moves quickly and directly to each position in the sequence of movements indicating that she has had some experience with the positions. She has strong arm movements, extending her energy out through the fingertips and supporting her arms with her back muscles. However, her feet, legs and turn out are not strengthened to intermediate level. She does not yet comprehend the importance of plie (bending of the legs). She is beginning to develop awareness of her center, but core strength and alignment are still developing.

What to change: The dancer does not use her plie (bending of the knees) in preparation for the pirouette (turn on the ball of one foot). She also does not use her plie at the end which results in her falling out of her end pose.

Center your weight evenly between your front and back foot and bend your knees deeply in 4th position in preparation for the pirouette (exhale). Then, push off hard with the back foot and push down into the ground hard with the standing foot (inhale). At the end of the pirouette, drop the pelvis straight down toward the floor and plie the front leg(exhale). The coccyx must remain dropped toward the floor to maintain alignment.

Cue: Tendu, Plieeeeee (using the voice in a long, low tone), push up (using the voice in a quick and high tone), and drop (spoken quickly).
